Educational Philosophies and Professional Development Plan

Motto: "It is easier to build a child than to rebuild an adult"

My teaching philosophy
My decision to pursue a teaching career, is due to my intrinsic desire to make a positive impact on the life of a child. Teaching is a noble and highly rewarding profession in which one is able to directly affect change in the lives of others and I cannot think of a better way to contribute to the betterment of the society. I believe that early education is crucial for individuals to develop necessary, life-long skills and attitudes in human development.  As teachers, it is our duty to provide a nurturing, safe environment for children to make mistakes and solve real life problems that they will encounter outside of classrooms. Thus, my teaching motto is 'It is easier to build a child than to rebuild an adult'.

My teaching style can best be described as one that incorporates a diversity of teaching methodologies and techniques. I am a strong advocate of hands-on and minds-on learning because I understand that learning occurs when a child is fully engaged in the process; making personal connection and application of knowledge. I believe that optimal learning takes place in small group, with positive reinforcement and adult scaffolding. I understand the importance of differentiated learning to appropriately address the different learning styles and needs of children in order to become an effective educator. Consequently, it is extremely important to determine each child's dominant learning style and monitor children's holistic development through authentic assessments.

Furthermore, parents are important figures in children’s lives. According to the Reggio Emilia's approach, parents are children’s first teacher; the parent’s role mirrors the community’s role, at both a school wide and a nation level. A teacher can inspire, guide and do whatever she can for the child, but without reinforcement at home and support from families. Therefore, there is a need for educators and parents to work collaboratively for the best interest of the child. I believe in promoting a home-school partnership through take-home kits for each term, weekly updates in communication book and exchange of important information of the child regularly.

To conclude, my goal as a teacher is to instill a passion for lifelong learning within children while providing them a nurturing and inclusive educational environment. I hope to continuously improve my teaching skills and tools necessary for children's success through sharing sessions and continuing professional development courses.
